Ducks Close Week Out With Two Losses

Oregon Ducks baseball hit a road bump as the week closed by losing twice to Washington State. On Saturday the Ducks fell 8-3 at home then on Sunday were hammered 10-6. However, the week nearly saw perfection when Jordan Spencer threw no-hit shut out on the way of beating the University of Portland 3-0 at Volcanoes Stadium in Kaiser.

Player of the Week
Oregon second baseman Aaron Payne led the Ducks at the pate last week batting .421 (8-for-19) with five runs scored. In addition to his eight base knocks, Payne drew two walks and was hit by a pitch for a .500 on-base percentage. Payne scored the game-winning in Oregon's 3-2 victory over Arkansas Pine Bluff in the seventh, drawing a leadoff walk, stealing second, and scoring on a sacrifice fly. Payne was 3-for-4 in UO's 3-0 over Portland on Wednesday, and 2-for-4 in Friday's 6-2 win over Washington State.

Pitcher of the Week
Volcanoes Stadium erupted on Wednesday night as Portland's Jeff Melby lined out to Aaron Payne, securing freshman lefty Jordan Spencer's no-hitter as the No. 8 Ducks defeated Portland 3-0. The Beaverton, Ore., native faced just two batters over the minimum in his career high nine innings on the mound, plunking a batter in the fifth, and the second reaching on an error in the seventh. Spencer (2-1) struck out a career-best five, as the lefty tossed the first complete game shutout of his career in just his third career start on the mound.

Oregon Notes
Oregon finished last week with a record of 3-2. The Ducks defeated Arkansas Pine Bluff, 3-2, on Monday and on Wednesday shut out Portland, 3-0, in Keizer, Ore., as freshman lefty Jordan Spencer pitched the first no-hitter for the Ducks since the program was reinstated (2009). The Ducks lost just their second series of the season, dropping the final two games of the Washington State series, after opening up the weekend with a 6-2 win on Friday night at PK Park. Aaron Payne led Oregon batting .421 last week, while Kyle Garlick hit his fifth home run of the season and drove in a team-leading six runs. Sophomore Ryon Healy is currently on a 10-game winning streak, the longest of any Duck this season.
