Relationship Developing Between Green and UO

A four-star running back with an astounding 29 offers in hand, Richmond (VA) Hermitage's Derrick Green has many suitors for his signature come February. eDuck Sports spoke with Green, who not only said he has a handful of unofficial visits planned for May, but is also expecting a visit from a certain position coach from a Pac-12 school.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"Yes sir. Coach [Gary] Campbell offered me this [past] Sunday."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"I would say not a lot, not a lot. I've been getting a lot of mail from them. I know recently, me and coach Campbell, we started talking about an offer. Recently, we've just been starting a relationship and it's been going real well."

How long ago did you start speaking with coach Campbell personally?

"Probably about two weeks ago. I always give him a call and Sunday, I called him, and he said he and the head coach [Chip Kelly] watched my film, so they were going to offer me because they like my style of running."

Has coach Campbell discussed getting you out for a visit, or him coming out to visit you, any time soon?

"I know he said he's going to be out here in the next two weeks and I definitely plan on making a visit up there and I definitely want to get to know the whole coaching staff and see the facilities and the academics and everything. I haven't planned that yet, but coach Campbell said he'd be out here in the next week or two."

What is your overall interest in Oregon at this point?

"I would say my interest is definitely high. I've always liked Oregon and they're definitely producing backs like LaMichael James and putting guys in the NFL. That's definitely a school that's going to run the ball and so I like that a lot about them...I definitely know that they're a college town, I know the atmosphere up there is great and I love their business program academic wise. I definitely like that because I definitely in business marketing or sports psychology."

Is distance going to be a factor for you?

"I'm open to whatever. Distance doesn't really matter to me right now, so as far as going away, it doesn't really matter."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I'd say I'm an all-purpose back. I catch really well out of the backfield, I have great vision, my speed -- I'm 6'0'', 215 lbs. and I run a 4.3. I'd definitely say that I'm a downhill runner and I can make some people miss."

Is there a player at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after at all?

"Growing up it was always Eddie George. I know as far as right now, I watch a lot of Trent Richardson, Montee Ball, Steven Jackson...I watch a lot of those guys...I know when I was at Michigan, the Michigan coach compared me to Walter Payton, so I'm definitely that style of runner."

What are you looking for in a program?

"Academics first and foremost. Outside of that, a great relationship with the coaching staff, I'd definitely like to play early, and when I go on a visit (to a school), I definitely plan on speaking to some of the players and see what they like about it and see how it is. The atmosphere (too). When I go on a visit, I have to have that feeling that this is the place."

What are some of the offers you currently hold from other schools?

"I have Wisconsin, Michigan, Tennessee, Miami, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Penn State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Purdue, Vanderbilt...I got 29 (laughter)."

Do you have a top five or a list of favorites at this point?

"Right now, no I don't. I haven't decided anything. Like I said, right now I'm just trying to get out to see some schools and build a relationship with some coaches, so right now I don't have a top five or anything."

In the back of your mind, do you have a timetable for when you might want to make a decision?

"Right now, I'm just letting everything go. I'm enjoying the process right now. I could commit tomorrow, so right now, I don't know."

As far as camps and unofficial visits go, where have you been and where do you plan on going over the next few months?

"I know my next visits are going to be to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. That will probably be here within the next month and I'll probably try to squeeze Oregon in there somewhere. I know I just got back from Virginia Tech this previous Saturday, I was at Clemson probably about two weeks ago, and I was at Michigan and Wisconsin probably about a month ago."
