Oregon A Top Destination For Whitener

Whether it's on offense or defense, Oregon's presence in Texas has paid major dividends in the past. With the linebacker position considered a position of particular need for the Ducks in 2013, Oregon has set its sights on Mansfield (TX) linebacker Chad Whitener.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"No I do not."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"They got my number from Deon Hollins who gave it to coach (Don) Pellum and he started e-mailing us. We started getting in contact with coach Pellum and that's really the only person we talked to up there."

How frequently have you been in contact with coach Pellum since Oregon has started recruiting you?

"We stay in contact through e-mail and I've probably talked to him twice in a month."

Has coach Pellum mentioned anything about stopping by to visit you this spring?

"He said he'd be by either this week or next week."

What is your overall interest in Oregon at this point?

"I like Oregon. Three BCS bowl games in a row, I mean, you really can't beat that coming out of a tough conference like the Pac-12."

What kinds of things have you discussed with coach Pellum in your conversations with him?

"It's kind of just checking in and seeing what could happen and where we are with them and stuff like that."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I'm instinctive, whenever I arrive to a play, I really arrive; I bring it. I have really good footwork and I use my hands really well."

Is there a guy at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"I mean, you really can't go wrong with Ray Lewis, Patrick Willis and Navorro Bowman."

What are you looking for in a program?

"I like programs that aren't afraid to move their linebackers around. I like that because it shows how versatile I could be and how versatile I know I am."

Has coach Pellum discussed with you a linebacker position he prefers you at?

"He likes me as more of a MIKE (middle linebacker)."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study in college?

"Yeah I want to major in business and I want to minor in communications."

What are some of the offers you currently hold from other schools?

"SMU and Louisiana Tech."

Are there any other schools, like Oregon, who haven't offered you but that you've had a lot of contact with?

"TCU, Arizona State -- they came by today and they said they were really interested, they want me to call them tonight -- Arkansas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma is going to be coming down soon too."

Do you have a top five or a list of favorites at this point?

"Yeah, I have TCU, Arkansas, Oregon and Texas A&M. Those are just the tops (in no order)."

As far as camps and unofficial visits go, where have you been and where do you plan on going over the next few months?

"I've been to Baylor, Arkansas, Texas A&M, North Texas, SMU, Louisiana Tech, I went to Texas last year for their spring game, Oklahoma...yeah, that's it. Based on what happens in the spring and what schools visit, that's where we're going to go in the summer...A lot of coaches have told me that they're going to see what they're going to do after they see me in practice and stuff. If they offer and I want to go (to that school), then I'll commit and show up at their camp. If I don't have offers, then we're going to hit all the schools that they said were interested."
