Ducks A Top Choice For Kalambayi

Projected as a standout at either defensive end or outside linebacker, Matthews (NC) Butler four-star athlete Peter Kalambayi has a towering ceiling which makes him one of the top defensive prospects in the country. The true definition of a student-athlete, Kalambayi is looking for the perfect mix between quality academics and high-level football.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

When did you receive that offer?

"I think February during basketball season."

Do you recall which coach from Oregon extended you that offer?

"Coach ‘Azz' (Jerry Azzinaro)."

Since then, how frequent has your contact with Oregon been?

"They've been to my school like four times...I talk to them on Facebook, too."

In your conversations with members of the Oregon coaching staff, what kinds of things have you talked about?

"They like me as a a pass-rushing linebacker type. They like me standing up sometimes and sometimes with my hand on the ground, things like that."

Has coach Azzinaro been the only coach from Oregon that you've been in contact with, or have there been others as well?

"The quarterback coach (Mark Helfrich) came one time too and I've talked to the linebackers coach (Don Pellum) on Facebook, but as far as conversations, it's been coach ‘Azz'."

Compared to some of the other relationship you've formed with other college coaches, how would you describe your relationship with coach Azzinaro?

"It's been a good relationship. Since the offer, I've been getting to know him and we're pretty close. (Oregon) is one of my top schools and that's why Oregon's one of my top schools."

Have you discussed with coach Azzinaro any potential dates for visits or anything like that?

"No, I haven't yet. I might have to wait until my official visit because I have a busy summer, but I don't know what I'm going to do."

What is it about Oregon that has you so interested in their program?

"Well their football program is great. They're a great football program and the way they play on the field, they play with a lot of speed and intensity; everybody plays with a high motor and that's the kind of guy I am. I feel like I'd fit in with their defense."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I'm physical against offensive linemen and I'm fast; I chase down guys from behind all the time. I think I'm a pretty good pass rusher and I play with discipline."

What are you looking for in a program?

"Solid academics and a great football program. I'm looking for that mixture and I heard Oregon has a great business school there, so a mixture of good academics and a great football program is all I'm looking for."

Who are your top schools at this point in the process?

"Stanford, Virginia, Oregon, Duke, Vanderbilt, North Carolina, and California."

As far as camps and unofficial visits go, where have you been and where do you plan on going over the next few months?

"I've been to Virginia, Duke, and North Carolina this spring so far and I'm going to be at Stanford in June. I don't know about the rest of the summer because I've been invited to a lot of things like ‘The Opening', so I'm going to be in Oregon at some point."

During your time in Oregon for the "The Opening", is that a time when you would consider taking an unofficial visit to Eugene?

"That would be good, but I don't know because I have camps after ‘The Opening', so I don't know how that's going to work."
