To Be Honest, Ducks On Top For Smith

It's not that often that players from the East Coast express such a strong desire to play out their collegiate careers on the West Coast, however, Brooklyn (NY) Xaverian three-star running back Laray Smith could be one to make an exception. Speedy and agile, Smith says his relationship with Oregon running back coach Gary Campbell strengthens almost daily.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"I wouldn't say that right now, but I'm saying that it's really close, like right there."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"It happened around two weeks ago, but since then, I've been talking to their running backs coach (Gary Campbell) everyday."

In your conversations with coach Campbell, what kinds of things have the two of you discussed?

"He told me he wanted me to go there (to Oregon), definitely. He just told me that I could be another speedster on the team and could be a guy who comes on the sweep or the reverse and be a playmaker for the offense...He seems to like the way I run and obviously my speed because Oregon is fast paced and everything and I'm a fast kid."

What is your overall interest in Oregon at this point?

"I consider Oregon to be number one, to be honest...They've always been my dream school, but it's not only just that, I know going there I could get a good education and be able to get a great job (in something) besides sports. I just love their football team and their uniforms and everything. Besides their uniforms, their offense is quick like I said before. I know for a fact that I could definitely fit in that offense and that everything would go right. I want to take a visit during the summer and take my official visit (to Oregon) and see how the school is."

Have you scheduled that unofficial visit yet?

"Not yet, but I'm definitely going during the summer, most likely during July."

Is distance a factor for you?

"I know it's going to be a big change in my life, but to have an opportunity like that, you might as well take it. I can adjust to different things, so I wouldn't mind."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I feel like I'm more like a playmaker; if it's 4th and 10 and you really need a first down, I'm like that kind of guy. I can score when you really need it."

Is there a player at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"I'd say that one guy I really like is Chris Johnson. Even though he didn't have the kind of year he should have, he's a real fast cat and he adjusts his body real good."

What are you looking for in a program?

"I'm looking for a great education program and I want to know that the coach is going to have my back, not only because I'm an athlete, but more than that. I want to build a better relationship."

How would you describe your relationship with coach Campbell to this point?

"I feel like we're really close. Number one, he's a running backs coach, so it's easy to talk to him about certain things and he's a real cool guy and he shows a lot of interest in me, so we've continued the conversation."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to major in when you get to college?

"Yeah, when I get to college, I want to major in communications."

What are some of the offers that you currently hold from other schools?

"I have UConn, Syracuse, Indiana, Tennessee, I have Buffalo, Western Michigan, I have Purdue."

Out of those schools, do you have a top five or a list of favorites?

"I'd say my top three would probably be right now: Tennessee, Syracuse, and UConn."

As far as camps and unofficial visits go, where have you been and where do you plan on going over the next few months?

"Well I haven't been to any camps because I've been running track, but this summer, I want to make it to two or three camps. I definitely want to see Oregon, but besides Oregon, I'm actually going to try to go to Tennessee and that's pretty much it so far that I know."
