Newby Talks Recruitment; Ducks

Two weeks ago, running back Terrell Newby (West Hills, CA) grabbed headlines with an eight touchdown performance on 16 carries for Chaminade College Prep. On Sunday, he discussed how that game impacted his recruitment and where he stands with several schools.

The performance grabbed the attention of several schools, including Ole Miss, who was in attendance to watch another player. Then Newby stole the show. It ended up landing him an offer from a school in his own backyard, UCLA.

However, Newby is waiting until the season is over to take more visits, having visited Nebraska earlier this year. On his list are hopeful visits to Oregon and Washington, and he said he plans on taking up to three visits. He said Oregon is still amongst his top schools.

"I'm definitely interested and I'm not pulling them out of my top five," Newby said. "I think I could fit in their system."

When discussing Oregon's system, Newby said that he feels he can do whatever the Ducks need him to do, whether it's running through the tackles or being used as an extra receiver in the backfield. "I don't have a preference," he said. "I think I could do both."

With Chaminade one win away from wrapping up a league title, Newby said that his goals for the rest of the season include a CIF championship in order to "go out the right way my senior year." Having played several D-I prospects this season, Newby said he's been working on improving and staying ahead in the game.

"I'm always trying to keep myself ahead of my opponents," he said.

One of the ways he is doing that is by improving on the mental side of the game by breaking down more game tape and recognizing formations.

"I'm mentally getting myself ready for the next level," he said. "I'm able to see a lot of things that I couldn't see my junior year. "Whenever I watch a game, I look at all of the offensive players and how they incorporate the running back."
