CSDTV: Players React to Comeback Win
BERKELEY -- With California's 71-68 win over Oregon State at Haas Pavilion on Thursday night, the Bears raised its all-time record against the Beavers to 79-60, while also earning head coach Mike Montgomery his 100th win as head coach in Berkeley.
Cal trailed 41-33 at the half, and was down by as many as 14 points, but came back to win for the first time this season after trailing at the half. The Bears are 11-0 when leading at the break, and are now 1-8 when trailing.
With 15 points against Oregon State on 5-of-16 shooting, junior guard Allen Crabbe moved into 16th place on Cal's all-time scoring list, passing graduate manager Theo Robertson. Crabbe now has 1,325 points in his career, while Robertson scored 1,315 from 2006-10. Next on the list is Jackie Ridgle, who had 1,343 from 1969-71.
The Bears and Beavers combined for just two free throws in the first half, with Oregon State going 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. Cal did not attempt its first free throw until Crabbe hit a pair with 7:11 left in the game.
The Bears hit a season-high 9 three-point shots on Thursday, including a team-high 4 from Cobbs. Cobbs scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half, shooting 4-of-9 after the break.
Sophomore big man David Kravish tallied one block to move up the program's all-time list in that category, now sitting tied for eighth place with Sean Lampley with 69 rejections.
Kravish also reached double figures for the third time in his career against Oregon State, constituting all the games he's played against the Beavers. After pouring in 12 points on Thursday, he is averaging 13.0 points per game against Oregon State, well above his career average of 7.2.
In total, four Bears scored in double figures. Four or more Cal players have scored in double figures six times now, with the last coming on Dec. 18 against UC Santa Barbara. Five Bears scored in double figures on Nov. 16, 2012 against Denver.
Cal's 25 assists on 30 field goals were a season high, and the team's highest total since the Bears dished out 28 helpers on Dec. 31, 2011. Cobbs matched his season best with 7 assists.
Though Cal shot 49.2 percent on the game, the Bears' big men shot 17-for-23. Robert Thurman went 4-for-4 for eight points, and also contributed six boards, three assists and two blocks. Junior Richard Solomon contributed 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting with seven rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes. Solomon scored 6 of Cal's first 11 points before hitting the bench with two fouls.
The Bears were out-rebounded, 36-29, and allowed 17 offensive rebounds. Crabbe led Cal with eight rebounds, tied for the game-high with Oregon State's Joe Burton.
