The Duck junior from Voorhees, N.J., beat a field of elite professionals by finishing in 11.00, with a legal tailwind of plus-1.8 miles per hour. Not only was that the fastest time of 2013 but also a school record, No. 2 all-time in Pac-12 history and No. 6 all-time in NCAA history.
The Pac-12 record is 10.97 seconds by UCLA's Gail Devers in 1987 and the NCAA record, according to the USTFCCCA, is 10.78 by Dawn Sowell of Louisiana State, set at the 1989 NCAA Championships in Provo, Utah. Gardner broke her own school record, 11.03, set in 2011.
Professional Tori Bowie was second at Mt. SAC in 11.14, followed by Miki Barber in third (11.16) and Lauryn Williams of Saucony fourth (11.20).
Oregon's Jenna Prandini was sixth in that heat in a personal best 11.31. The freshman from Clovis, Calif., posted the No. 3 time in school history.
Gardner and Prandini were also on the 4x100 relay team that finished fourth in a season best 43.82, Chizoba Okodogbe and Phyllis Francis joined those two on the third-fastest relay in school history.
Also Saturday, Laura Roeseler roared to one of the best 800 meters ever at Oregon. The junior from Fargo, N.D., won the meet's top section in a personal best 2:01.76. That was the second fastest time in the NCAA this season, and the No. 4 time in Pac-12 history.
It was also the fourth-best time in school history and the fastest 800 run by an Oregon woman in 28 years.
Good Gracious Gardner!
