Ohio State hands No. 14 Oregon a 5-0 loss

EUGENE, Ore. – Ohio State broke open a tight game with four runs in the top of the ninth inning en route to a 5-0 non-conference win at PK Park on Saturday.

Three Oregon (11-4) pitchers held Ohio State (8-4) to just one run on three hits over the first eight innings, but they couldn't match Buckeyes' starter Ryan Riga who threw a complete-game shutout. Riga (2-0) allowed just five hits while striking out 10 and walking just one.

Freshman Matt Krook (0-1) took the loss for Oregon despite allowing just one run on one hit over 5.1 innings. He struck out 10 Buckeyes, but struggled with his control walking six.

Krook was charged with Ohio State's first run after walking Ronnie Dawson with one out in the sixth. Oregon went to the bullpen, but freshman reliever Trent Paddon gave up a RBI double to Ryan Leffel, the first batter he faced, to give OSU a 1-0 lead.

The Ducks' best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the first. Aaron Payne, who went 3-for-4, reach first on a bunt base hit. He moved to third on a pair of throwing errors on a pickoff attempt by Riga and an errant throw by the first baseman Leffel. Payne was cut down in a rundown between third and home on a Tyler Baumgartner comebacker.

Oregon and Ohio State will wrap up their three-game series Sunday at Noon at PK Park. The Ducks will send senior Jeff Gold (3-0) to the mound.
