Locke previews upcoming decision

Beaumont (Tex.) Central defensive back James Locke III discusses the thought process going into his upcoming decision on July 1.

James Locke is ready to get the recruitment process over with.

The three-star Beaumont (Tex.) Central defensive back will announce where he's playing college football on July 1.

"I feel like I'm making the right choice," Locke said. "I just feel it in my gut…and I think that's how it's supposed to be."

After he announces his decision, Locke said he won't be listening to other schools in an effort to not appear disrespectful to the school he chooses.

"I don't believe in committing and going to visit other schools," Locke said. "It's kind of like being married. You can't ask your wife if you can visit another female."

Locke recently released a Top 10 list, but said that six schools have a real shot at landing his services in the secondary.

"Penn State, Michigan State, TCU, Oregon, Baylor and also Stanford," he said.

After visiting multiple schools and talking with coaches, Locke feels he has all the information he needs to make a decision.

"I've been talking to Oregon, Penn State and Baylor mostly," Locke said. "Also, UCLA. I've been talking to those schools the most over the last week."

Locke spoke highly of the Oregon coaching staff after taking a visit to Eugene earlier in the month. He's been able to develop a specific bond with secondary coach John Neal.

"We still chat every now and then," Locke said. "Coach Neal is a great coach and I can see myself with him for the next four years."

Locke has yet to visit Penn State or Michigan State, but feels that he has a great relationship with the coaching staffs and that the opportunities that both programs offer are too good to leave them out of consideration.

"They both came down in spring and evaluated me from there," Locke said. "Both told me I have a high chance of playing as a true freshman so that's why I'm highly considering them."
