Marcus Mariota may be set for a record setting performance against South Dakota Saturday night. Mariota needs one touchdown and 4 passing touchdowns to set Oregon career marks in both categories. If the quarterback accounts for 332 yards Saturday, he will eclipse Bill Musgrave’s record mark of 8140 career yards.
Mariota has thrown a passing touchdown in every game he has played and holds the #2 spot among quarterbacks for most consecutive games with a touchdown passes thrown with 26. He trails only Rakeem Cato of Marshall who has thrown a touchdown in 32 consecutive games.
Autzen Stadium has proven to be a house of horrors for visiting teams as Oregon has not lost a home opener since the Ducks dropped a 30-24 decision to Indiana. In the past five years the Ducks and LSU both share a 33-2 record at home which marks the best home record in college football since 2009.
A rebuilding Coyote defense may be in trouble against the Ducks who accounted for 67 explosion plays (25+ yard plays) with 21 of those ending in the end zone. The exceptional thing about these explosions plays is how the Ducks seem to get them.
The Ducks do not often go deep down field with their passing game, rather using exceptional blocking so ball carriers can get into the open field and make plays.
Look for the Ducks to get up big early and coast to an easy win as the Ducks get valuable live playing time for the 5 true freshmen in the two deep. Oregon has put no fewer than 5 true freshmen on the field since 2010.
