With a Little Luck Ducks Lead by 14

SALT LAKE CITY – One of the strangest plays of the 2014 football season turned things around for Oregon and at halftime the Ducks lead the Utah Utes 24-10.

In the first quarter Utah jumped to a seven point lead after scoring on the opening drive when Bubba Poole ran the ball in from the 6-yard line for the Utes. Oregon faced a stout Utah defense and even with quarterback Marcus Mariota sprinting 61 yards on the ensuing drive the Ducks could not get into the end zone. Oregon had to punt and the two teams traded possession for the rest of the quarter.

Then on Utah’s first possession of the second quarter the miraculous happened. Utah quarterback Travis Wilson launched a long pass down field that was caught by a wide open Kaelin Clay who sprinted to the endzone unimpeded, but before crossing the goal line, Clay dropped the ball and the fumble was recovered by Joe Walker who returned the ball 100 yards for an Oregon touchdown. Following the successful point after by Aidan Schneider the Ducks tied the game and took the momentum. Oregon scored two more touchdowns on TD passes from Mariota to Dwayne Stanford for two yards to make it 14-7 following the PAT. Later in the quarter Mariota hit Pharaoh Brown on a 6-yard TD pass and with the successful PAT it was Oregon 21-7.

Schneider finished Oregon scoring with a 39-yard field goal.

Utah scored a 32-yard field goal by Andy Phillips as time expired in the half to make the score Oregon 24 Utah 10.

For the game Mariota is 9-for-14, 101 yards and two TDs and he also has 83 yards rushing. Utah’s Travis Wilson is 8-for-13 for 133 yards. Devontae Booker is the Ute’s leading rusher with 42 yards on 11 carries.

Oregon will receive the kickoff when the third quarter begins.
