Mariota Named Finalist for Heisman Trophy

As expect all season, Marcus Mariota will attend this year's Heisman Trophy presentation to be held in New York City, and should he win he'll become only the second person from an Oregon university to be so honored. Mariota has led the No. 2 Ducks to a place in the NCAA Championship semi-finals against Florida State in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2015.

"It is an honor to be named as a finalist for this year's prestigious Heisman Trophy,” Mariota said. “It is humbling to be considered for an award that I have admired for a very long time.

“I would like to thank my teammates and coaches as I could not have been recognized as a finalist without their help.

“Go Ducks."

Also named finalists along with Mariota were wide receiver Amari Cooper of Alabama and Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon.

Mariota, led the Pac-12 Conference Champion Ducks to a 12-1 season record and 8-1 in Pac-12 Conference play. So far this year Mriota has thrown for 3,783 yards, 38 touchdowns on 254-for-372 passing (68.3 percent) with only two interceptions and a quarterback efficiency rating of 186.3 in 13 games. He rushed for a net 669-yards, scoring 16 touchdowns. Mariota also had one pass reception for a touchdown giving him a total of 55 touchdowns scored this season, which is a Pac-12 Conference record for touchdowns scored in a single season.

All season long, Mariota has been projected as the Heisman favorite and many feel he will win the award by a large margin of votes. Should he become the Heisman winner Mariota will be the first player with state of Oregon ties since 1962 when Oregon State's Terry Baker won the award.
