Kansas City (Mo.) Winnetonka safety Marquise Doherty has finished with his visits and knows his two finalists. Does Oregon or Missouri have a leg up on the other?
knows everything he needs to know about his two finalists. Now comes the arduous decision making process.
The three-star 2015 Winnetonka safety is still down to Oregon
and he told eDuck on Monday evening that the two are dead even.
“I don’t think until I really sit down with my parents and talk about the pros and cons that I’ll really start leaning one way or the other,” he said.
Doherty is coming off of a successful official visit to Missouri
over the weekend. He also hosted members from each program’s coaching staffs last week for in-home visits. First was a visit from Missouri coach Andy Hill.
“My parents and I have known Coach Hill for going on two years now,” Doherty said. “They know what he’s about and he knows what they’re about so, I wouldn’t say it was a lot shorter (than the Oregon visit), but it was shorter because there wasn’t as much to cover.”
Three members of the Oregon coaching staff, including head coach Mark Helfrich
and secondary coach John Neal
enjoyed the Doherty’s company the following evening.
“It was a really good time,” he said. “My parents really enjoyed them and they really enjoyed my parents as well. It wasn’t even like coaches coming into your house, it was really, I don’t know, it was just kind of like having your neighbors over. It was really nice.”
Doherty’s parents did not accompany him on his official visit to Eugene last month, so the in-home visit was an opportunity for them to get to know Helfrich and Neal personally.
“We had a couple of hours to talk,” he said. “Mainly it was a lot of just telling stories, like my parents telling stories about me and my siblings and then Coach Helfrich and Coach Neal telling stories about their families. And then Coach Helfrich just telling them what they’re all about as a program since my parents didn’t get to go with me on my visit, and just kind of how they handle their kids and stuff like that.”
Excited to get the process over with, Doherty expects to announce his decision sooner rather than later. He knows for sure that he’ll start his final evaluation of both programs in the coming days.
“Here in the next week or so I’ll sit down and talk with my parents about everything now that we’ve done the official with Mizzou and they’ve met both staffs and stuff like that,” he said. “We have a lot to talk about.”
