For the first time in Dana Altman's tenure at Oregon, the Ducks have beaten the the California Bears 80-69 at Haas Pavilion on the campus of the University of California. Joe Young was the leading scorer with 25 points while Dwayne Benjamin added 18 and Elgin Cook had 17.

Oregon led by Joseph Young, Elgin Cook and Dwayne Benjamin shot 50.9 percent from the field on 29-of-56 shooting but didn't look to the 3-ball as much as they have in earlier games only shooting 5-of-13 or 38.5 percent. The Ducks also were very efficient from the free throw line hitting 17-of-20 free throws. Oregon also were very tough on the boards as Benjamin and Dillon Brooks each hauled in 10 boards apiece, and as a team had 39 rebounds to 28 for California.

The Ducks utilized a strong defensive game and nearly went the entire second half in zone because of foul problems to Jordan Bell and Benjamin. Bell had been a force in the first half but early in the second quarter he picked up his fourth foul and was forced to the bench. Oddly enough, he never returned as the smaller Ducks seemed a step quicker on defense and scored at will on offense.

Cal shot 44.6 percent in FG shooting on 25-of-56 shooting including 8-of-17 in 3's but missed some critical free throws going 11-for-19 at the line.

Jabari Bird was set for a big night going for a total of 22, but most of that damage was done in the first half when he scored 18 points. David Kravish finished with 14 while Tyrone Wallace and Jordan Matthews both had 11.

Oregon improves to 21-8 for the year and are 11-5 in conference play while Cal slips to 16-12 for the season and 6-9 in the Pac-12 Conference.

The Ducks cross over the bay to Stanford on Sunday for a 4 p.m. match up with the Cardinal.
