Winston stays in-state

Like high school teammate Brady Breeze, Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic LB La'Mar Winston Jr. will be headed south to Eugene for his college career. On Thursday, the four-star prospect picked Oregon.

Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic linebacker La'Mar Winston Jr. announced at The Opening on Thursday that he will be an Oregon Duck. The four-star prospect, and top-ranked outside linebacker in the state of Oregon, will follow high school teammate Brady Breeze to Eugene and became the 14th overall commitment for the Ducks in the 2016 class following an earlier commitment from top Midlands cornerback Jared Mayden.

Winston had previously narrowed his list down to three choices and picked the Ducks over Stanford and UCLA. He highlighted the strengths of every program academically and athletically earlier this week with eDuck.com in anticipation of his decision, and commented that his relationship with the coaches, the feel of the town and the way he meshes with the Oregon defensive scheme were big positives for the Ducks.

“I don’t talk much about Oregon football because I know that’s going to be a set done deal,” he said. “As proven in the last few years, Oregon is going to produce athletes and I know that they are going to be able to advance me athleticism-wise and stuff and I’m excited about that.

But what really stuck out to me about Oregon was the academic support and what they have to bring towards my psychology degree. I talk to their linebackers coach about that and it’s been great to be able to know what they have to offer and how I’ll be helped, and how they don’t accept failure, and that they’ll be able to be there for me and I’ll be able to succeed in my goal, which is to get my psychology degree. And, on top of that, the relationships I feel with the coaches are just phenomenal.”

Along with Darrian Franklin, Winston becomes the second true linebacker Oregon has landed in this class. However, it is expected that Hunter Kampmoyer and Troy Dye will also see time at linebacker as well, giving the Ducks a rare haul at that position at the moment.
