Helfrich Says Defense Communicating on Field

Mark Helfrich spoke to media following practice on Thursday as the Ducks prepare for Eastern Washington University on Saturday.  Helfrich answered a number of questions indicating that his team’s mindset is good as well as the on-field communication. The game on Saturday will be carried on the Pac-12 Networks and kicks off at 5 p.m. Pacific.

Mark Helfrich felt his team is communicating well on the field, especially the defense in Thursday’s practice. The Ducks practice with lots of sound distraction making the players use visual signals as well as rehearsing where each player should be on the field.

The headman also went on to say that quarterback Vernon Adams has adapted well and is ready to go.

“I think he is a good place from a game plan standpoint, for both him and everyone else,” Helfrich said of Adams. “He has a very good grasp of that.”

Helfrich also indicated that freshman safety Fotu Leiato would play this season.

“Fotu plays a million miles an hour, every snap, every special teams situation,” comment Helfrich of Leito’s practice habits. “The sensation hype was not just hype, the guy can bring it.”

The Ducks practice again on Friday and on Saturday take the field for real against the Eagles of Eastern Washington at 5 p.m. Pacific at Autzen Stadium. The Pac-12 Networks will carry the game live with Kevin Calabro calling the action with Yogi Roth as the analyst and Lewis Johnson covering the sidelines.
