Oregon drops its third loss of the season to Washington State

On a day that mixed sun, wind and rain, Oregon’s performance was equally erratic, suffering a disappointing loss to the visiting Washington State Cougars. The Ducks seemed to have the game salted away in the fourth quarter until the Cougar’s Luke Falk directed two drives that sent the game into overtime.

Jeff Lockie opened at quarterback for Oregon, and while not putting up dazzling numbers, he managed to scrambled his way out of trouble throwing for 123 yards on 22 attempts, tossed for two touchdowns. Royce Freeman was relentless and crushing in amassing 248 yards on the ground and scoring three TDs. Taylor Alie briefly shared the QB duties, and ran for a TD in the first quarter to put the Ducks ahead.

Defensively, there were some bright spots, including six sacks, and notable hard hitting by Charles Nelson, Alex Balducci and Christian French. Yet troubles with tackling continued to cost the Ducks at several points and the Cougars exploited this on the ground and in the air.

The game ended on a foul note, as Jeff Lockie threw a desperation attempt to Dwayne Stanford, only to be picked off in the end zone, sealing the Ducks’ failing fate. This game left players, coaches and fans frustrated, and Mark Helfrich, looking for answers…
