Ducks prepare for Colorado

Oregon offensive coordinator Matt Lubick spoke to media following practice on Sept. 21 and responded to a number of questions including one about penalties.

Lubick was asked about a penalty against senior OL Cam Hunt for unnecessary roughness. The flag was thrown after Hunt ran into a Nebraska defender after the play was clearly over. Trailing the Cornhuskers 28-20 with 4:27 left in the third quarter with a second-and-5 at the Nebraska 45. when Dakota Prukop handed the ball to Tony Brooks-James who went left and was pushed out of bounds at the N41. Hunt, is caught throwing a block on a Nebraska defensive end, but as Hunt prepared to make the block, it was clear that Brooks-James was already two yards past Hunt and the DE plus was out of bounds. A flag was thrown an Hunt for unnecessary roughness (a 15-yard penalty) and Hunt was pulled from the game. The Ducks would have been third and less than a yard for a first down at the 41-yard line, but with the loss of 15 yards, Oregon faced a its own 44.

On the next snap, Prukop made a great pass to Charles Nelson that would have gave Oregon a first down at the Nebraks 40, but Doug Brenner was overpowered by the defender and Brenner clearly held the man at the line of scrimmage. Now the Ducks were faced with third and 26 at the Oregon 33. Prukop took the snap and made another great pass to Nelson, who initially caught the ball at the N39 but fell back to the N41 in the pass catch. The Ducks were faced with fourth-and-1 with 3:21 left in the quarter; Prukop handed the ball off to @Kani Benoit and the speedy runnng back went around the left side, made a cut back and was gone to the endzone, 41 yards later for the touchdown.

Somehow the Ducks managed to scored despite two mistakes on the offensive line.

Lubick said that Hunt was immediately pulled from the game for the penalty and that the Duck coaching staff has been emphasising smart play this week.

Oregon lost the game to Nebraksa, 35-32 and a total of 13 penalties for minus 126 yards accessed against the Ducks were called.

This week Oregon faces Colorado at Autzen Stadium with a kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Pacific. The game will be carried on the Pac-12 Networks.
