Images of a disasterous game for Oregon

Oregon entered the field at Autzen through a fog or smoke and never seemed to get out of it on Saturday, as Stanford had its way with the Ducks throughout the day. Familiar themes and issues rose again, with a porous defense that was manhandled by a faster and more powerful Cardinal offense.

Despite an encouraging start on defense, Oregon regressed to its characteristic failures, including missed tackles, failed coverage, and sluggish pursuit.

On offense, Oregon’s production was modest at best. Justin Herbert scampered for an apparent touchdown only to be recalled due to a penalty. Herbert responded by throwing the first of two picks in the end zone.

Touchdowns by Royce Freeman, Charles Nelson, Kani Benoit and Johnny Mundt put points on the board,  but far too little and far too late.

Expressions on the faces of players revealed a wide divide, perhaps representing a divide in attitudes and intensity within the roster. While fans began the day with a pledge to stand united, by game’s end, they were a divided, and absent, group. While some players looked up and ahead for hope, others looked down in search of answers.

Head Coach Mark Helfrich simply looked bewildered…
