"I'm going to tell our offense every time they take the field that they have one minute to play," remarked Bellotti. Not a bad idea considering the results of the USC game. Of course this was the eighth time in Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington's career that he has engineered a comeback in the fourth quarter.
Oregon sacked Carson Palmer five times for 30 yards loss. Joey Harrington was sacked twice for eight yards loss.
"I've done it before," responded Joey Harrington when asked about how he stays calm in the pressure packed situations. "I've learned how to do it, and I've learned how to carry myself in those situations."
"My main thing is to go out and play hard nosed football," said running back Maurice Morris. "As long as we keep winning, for me breaking long runs is secondary."
"We can come down to the wire every week," said running back Onterrio Smith. "As long as we come away with a 'W."
"Just seeing Joey take the field with as much confidence as he did," remarked Smith on the last possession of the game. "I knew right then and there that we going to get a score or a field goal position.
Oregon extended its school-record Autzen Stadium winning streak to 23 games. California that won 26 games between 1919-23 holds the Pac-10 home win-streak record.
Harrington moved to sixth in total offense in Oregon records with 185 yards against USC. Harrington now has 4,968 yards of total offense. He passed Tony Graziani who had 4,783 yards. Graziani, incidentally was the honorary captain for the USC game Saturday night.
Steve Smith tied an Autzen Stadium record with his three interceptions. Four players in Autzen history have had three interceptions in one game. Most recently it was Herman O'Berry that recorded three picks in one game against Cal in 1992, and the Ducks beat the Bears 37-17 that day.
