Open letter to Oregon students, fans and alumni.
Dear President Frohnmayer, Oregon students, fans, alumni, et. al.,
I wanted to write this open letter addressing the conduct and sportsmanship of all Oregon fans during last weekend's home game against Michigan. I traveled from Detroit Friday Sept 19th in the evening and made the drive from Portland to Eugene in the morning. My 2 friends accompanied me, one flew from LA, one flew from Mississippi, just to catch the game. My friends and I were expecting to be harassed, boo'd, ridiculed, and everything that comes with supporting the visiting team in college athletics. We sat in section 19, just three "true blue" Michigan fans, amongst hundreds of yellow shirts blowing those loud duck calls. I couldn't have been more pleased. The game (although I wish UM would have played better, or maybe that the Ducks would have played >>worse), was a wonderful surprise. As I mentioned, I expected the worst, having been to several other away stadiums in my day, but I was pleasantly surprised!
ALL of the fans were extremely polite, courteous, kind, in every way imaginable. We enjoyed the facilities at the field house with all the food and entertainment, but again we were only a few of hundreds of Ducks fans....AWESOME sportsmanship.
Everyone in Eugene and surrounding areas should be proud to have such great fans. It truly is the LOUDEST stadium on the planet and I wish everyone in the nation could visit a home crowd in Eugene as they demonstrate what sportsmanship SHOULD look like. Your fans are a model for the rest of the nation...I hope it rubs off. It was the best trip anyone could have made...even though we lost.
Thanks for the great time,
Ann Arbor, MI
