Weekend Recruiting Update

While information coming out of Autzen regarding recruiting is as guarded as the bombing reports from Afghanistan, some surprising news is being reported. According to the Yakima-Herald, Andy Collins a 6-2, 195 pound quarterback as given a verbal to the Ducks.

The other surprise of the weekend was a visit by Haloti Ngata and Kevin Sperry. Ngata, 6-4, 310 is a defensive lineman and reportedly had given a verbal to Nebraska. Verbal commitments are not binding and a recruit is authorized to take five official visits. Clearly the Ducks are still in contention to recruit Ngata, the player that TheInsiders.com ranks as the number three coming out of high school this season. Like Ngata, Sperry has given a commitment. Sperry, 6-2, 220 is currently at L.A. Harbor Junior College and played linebacker, has given a verbal commitment to Washington State. Sperry is ranked 75 among all Junior College players by JCFootball.com.

Among other players in Eugene this weekend were Parris Moore, Aaron Gipson, Wesley Walker and Nate VanderPol.

Moore, 5-10, 170 from Fountain Valley, California (FVHS), has given a verbal commitment to Oregon earlier this fall. Gipson, 5-9, 170 from Fontana, California, is a defensive back and some reports indicate that Gibson may have given the Ducks a commitment. Walker is a 6-2, 215 linebacker from Bishop Amat High School in La Puenta, California. Walker is also being recruiting by UCLA, Stanford and Florida. VanderPol, 6-4, 285 from Federal Way, Washington attended the Nike Camp in Eugene last June and was one of the top three linemen at the camp.

Earlier last week Tate Pittman, 6-1, 225 from Scottsdale Junior College committed to the Ducks. Pittman is listed number 41 by Junior College Player by JCFootball.com for all JC players.

There are some indications that safety Gibril Wilson, 6-1, 190 from CC of San Francisco is a soft commit to Oregon. Wilson is the number 45-ranked player by JCFootball.com.

No recruits will visit next weekend due to Christmas.

January 4, 2002 will be a huge recruiting weekend for the Ducks. Hershel Dennis, Darnell Bing and Winston Justice from Long Beach Poly High School will be visiting Eugene. All three are Prepstar Dream Team rated.
