A Sight Not Seen Since '36

The University of Oregon saw all five of their starters reach double figures in a 91-62 romp of the #13 UCLA Bruins in front of 9,087 at McArthur Court in Eugene.

UCLA seemingly lost the game when Oregon took the tip and went up 2-0 at the 19:00 mark and never relinquished that lead. The Ducks made the lead 15 at the 10:00 mark, and 20 at the 5:00 mark in the first half.

Oregon dominated every major statistical category on the night outside of bench points, which UCLA won 34-15. The Ducks out rebounded the Bruins 41-29 and also outscored UCLA inside 38-28.

Freddie Jones led the charge for Oregon scoring 26 points in 35 minutes. Chris Christoffersen also had a huge performance putting up 14 points and 15 rebounds. Also in double figures for the Ducks were Luke Ridnour with 14, and Luke Jackson and Robert Johnson both with 11.

One of the surprises on the night was the play of Bruin stars Matt Barnes, Jason Kapono and Dan Gadzuric. Those three scored a combined 14 points and had 9 rebounds. Gadzuric had little chance to get in the flow as Christoffersen played great defense on him all night.

"I just wanted to play as well as I could and keep Gadzuric away from the hoop as much as possible," Chris Christoffersen told OSN after the game.

The Bruins did have two players in double figures, T.J. Cummings and Billy Knight with 15 and 14 respectively.

A big difference in the game was field goal percentage as Oregon shot 56.7% from the floor and UCLA shot 41.8%. The Ducks were also 45.5% from beyond the arc, and UCLA was only 7.1%, shooting 1-14 for the game.

"What a job by this team to focus in and execute this game plan. They were flawless in doing everything we needed to do," Coach Ernie Kent told OSN.

This victory was Oregon's biggest ever against UCLA. It was Howard Hobson's first year as Oregon's coach, 1936, when Oregon beat UCLA at home 56-30.

Oregon next looks to #20 USC at McArthur Court on Saturday in a battle of the top teams in the PAC-10. The Ducks are now 8-2 in conference play, and 16-5 overall. Saturday's victor will grab sole possession of first place in the PAC-10 with only four weeks to go before the PAC-10 Tournament in Los Angeles.

The crowd will again play a major part in the game Saturday.

"Well I hope the Pit Crew enjoyed those pizzas (we gave them before the game), and we're going to feed them again on Saturday as good as they did tonight. We'll have to feed them every game if it's like that in here," Ernie Kent said.
