Ducks discover first round opponent.

Oregon will face Montana in the first round of the NCAA Men's playoff in Sacramento California on Thursday, March 14, 2002. The Ducks are the second seed in the Midwest region. Oregon was the regular season champion for the Pac-10 conference though the Ducks lost to USC in the Pac-10 tourney. Arizona won the Pac-10 tourney on Saturday. The Ducks are the highest seeded Pac-10 team.

Kansas is the number one seed in the Midwest region and will play Holy Cross on Thursday in St. Louis.

Montana finished the season 16-14 for the regular season and 7-7 in the Big Sky conference. The Grizzles won the Big Sky Tourney beating Eastern Washington 70-66 on Saturday. The Grizzlies finished fourth in the Big Sky regular season standings.

Montana is led by junior guard David Bell, 6-1, 13.9 ppg. Senior forward Dan Trammel, 6-6. 10.9 ppg, is the second leading scorer. Junior forward Brent Cummings, 6-7, 10.1 ppg is the third leading scorer.

The only common opponent for Montana and Oregon this season was Washington State. Montana defeated WSU 75-71 on November 28, 2001. The Ducks defeated the Cougars twice in the Pac-10 regular season. On January 26, 2002, Oregon beat out WSU 94-86 in Pullman, and then on February 21, the Ducks blew out the Cougars 115-77 in Eugene.

Stanford is the other Pac-10 team in the Midwest region and will take on ninth-seed Western Kentucky. Stanford is the eighth seed in the Midwest.

USC will be the fourth seed in the South region and will play UNC-Wilmington. California is also in the South region as the sixth seed and will play Penn in the first round. Arizona is the third seed in the Western region and will face UC-Santa Barbara. UCLA is eight seed in the Western region and will start off facing Ole Miss.
