"He's very happy," said his mother, Shawn. "We haven't been talking about it much because we have been trying to keep it hush-hush.
"Nathan had been considering both Boise State and Utah and visited both schools. He went to Oregon a little more than a week before he was offered, and he came back completely changed. He just loved the place, you could tell--both the facilities and the coaches. He was just different than when he came back from the other schools.
"But Oregon was waiting on quarterback Cody Hawkins. When Cody declined their offer and committed to Boise State, that opened up the door for Nathan," said Mrs. Costa.
"So, he came back and waited to hear if he would be getting a scholarship offer. He spoke with their coaches a little bit on Tuesday night I think, but he didn't receive an offer until Thursday morning. When he got the offer, he immediately accepted.
"We are so proud of him. He'll be playing in the Pac-10 and we'll be able to see him play. I didn't really have a preference about where he played, but I was hoping for the Pac-10 because we have a large family with seven kids, so it's not easy for us to travel. Nathan is the second oldest. He has a brother who is in the Air Force and is stationed in Boise.
"This community is so supportive of Nathan. He's really a hero here. They'll all be watching him. But he's so humble and does things to help people here," she said.
"We are located between Modesto and Merced and are just a small town of about 4,000--60% Portuguese. The world famous Hilmar Dairy Company that makes great cheese is here."
