On Saturday some of the top high school football players in the country gathered at USC for the annual Nike Camp put on by Student Sports. No player had a better day on offense than wide receiver Whitney Lewis from St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, California.
Lewis is considered by many to be the top wide receiver prospect in California and one of the best in the country for the class of 2003. Whitney combines excellent size (6-1, 209 lbs), with great hands and blazing speed. At yesterday's camp, Lewis ran a blistering 4.33 forty, which was second among more than 350 participants, then added a very impressive 34" vertical jump, a 4.01 clocking in the shuttle and 22 reps at 185 pounds. During the one on one drills, Lewis was a show stopper. Whitney repeatedly made precise cuts and closed on passes that appeared to be overthrown until he made the difficult over-the-shoulder catch. Ironically, Lewis wasn't thrilled with his performance and is planning to attend the NorCal Nike Camp and possibly even the Eugene camp on June 8th to see if he can put up even better numbers.
On the recruiting front, Florida State appears to have a slight lead over Michigan, Oregon, Washington and Texas. The Ducks have already offered a scholarship.
