It seems like Malik Hairston got the ball rolling and then Tajuan Porter followed suit. Somehow, Oregon popped guys from Detroit and now the Ducks are going to the Midwest with regularity.
For his latest trick, Coach Ernie Kent went into Chicago and landed a power forward. Joevan Catron, a 6-foot-6 ½ insider off the Mean Streets AAU team, committed this week after visiting campus.
"The visit was great," Catron said. "They had the USC game and I always wanted to see USC play in person. The guys are somewhat just like me: down to business and trying to get somewhere. It's a beautiful place to go to school. It's calm and it's not real noisy."
The perfect place say, for a kid from Chi-Town to call his home for the next four years? "I see an opportunity for me to come right in and play. The team should be all recruit and I can be an immediate from impact."
Catron, a strong and powerful insider who plays with an edge to go with his aggression, has always carried a reputation as a hard playing prospect. Now, he's taking his toughness to the Pac-10.
"We're tough kids (from Chicago), Catron said. "In the Pac-10 we'll compete against Arizona, UCLA and Stanford.
"The way I play – rough and rugged – I'm in the right place on the West Coast to play like that. I'm not going to back down from nobody – I don't care how big you are. I'm going to do what it takes to win and get the job done. My jump shot has gotten a lot better but I haven't been able to show people that yet but they'll see it this coming season."
