Ducks pick up commitment

(6-2, 210, 4.5), of Long Beach, Calif., phoned the Oregon coaches and made an oral commitment the evening of Oct. 17.

"I talked with Don Pellum (linebackers) and Mike Bellotti both tonight," said Jurray Casey, of Long Beach Polytechnic. "They sounded like they were excited.

"I decided when I got home from the visit there on Sunday (Oct. 16). I hadn't called them yet and let them know, though.

"The atmosphere there was what I really liked. It reminds me of my (high school) football team. They're all close.

"My host for the visit was Kevin Garrett (defensive back) and others visiting were my teammate Travon Patterson (wide receiver) and Shareece Wright (cornerback, Colton, Calif.). We got along well and had a good time," he said.

"I stayed at the Hilton. We watched the game, he showed me around the school, and I met with the coaches.

"The campus was very nice, and they have nice, cool coaches.

"They want me as a linebacker. I am happy that I can play that position.

"Really, it is just the atmosphere there that sold me," he emphasized.

"I chose Oregon over Cal (offer) and Oregon State (offer). Those were the ones I was considering the most.

"I am definite in my plans to go to Oregon," he said. "I am not even going to take my official visit to Oregon State (set for Nov. 5)."

Long Beach Poly (3-2) hosts Cabrillo (Lompoc) for homecoming on Oct. 21.
