"The schools that are interested in me are mainly looking at me to play defensive back," Grant Schwartz said.
He may get his chance to play the position on Oct. 28. "I have an AC separation and I will likely play receiver or defensive back in the San Clemente game." According to his father, Brian Schwartz, the injury occurred in the second quarter of the game against Mission Viejo (Oct. 14).
"An AC separation is a shoulder separation. The acromion -- the end of the scapula -- and the clavicle separated on his throwing arm. Right now he is resting it to help it to heal. He should return in some capacity one week from this coming Friday for the game versus San Clemente," Mr. Schwartz explained.
"The top schools I am looking at right now are Ohio State, Oregon (offer), Boise State (offer), Washington State, Virginia Tech and USC," Schwartz said. "Ohio State is slightly over Oregon right now.
"Ohio State has a really good tradition and I have been following them since I was a little kid. My father played ball for them (defensive back), so I had an interest in them from the very beginning. The coaches there are great.
"About a week-and-a-half ago, Luke Fickell (co-defensive coordinator/linebackers) text messaged me 'We'd like to make you a Buckeye' and Tim Beckman called me and said 'Welcome to the Buckeyes' over the phone. I am just waiting for the official call from Coach (Jim) Tressel. He wanted to see my film personally before officially offering, and there was some sort of mix-up and he didn't get it. So, he's just waiting to see that," Schwartz explained.
"Oregon offered me about a week-and-a-half ago. They have a great coaching staff who have shown me a lot of interest. They are closer to home and have an amazing facility.
"Washington State hasn't offered, but they have indicated they will soon.
"Virginia Tech only offers to kids they know will commit, and since Ohio State is so high up on my list, they haven't offered to me because they don't know if I'd be that interested. They have been showing a lot of interest in me though.
"Southern Cal is so close to home -- it would be nice to go there," he said.
His father added, "Pete Carroll was my coach when I was a senior in college -- so there is that connection. Grant is very interested, but they haven't offered."
"They would probably move up," Schwartz said, "if they offer."
According to his father, official visits are trying to be set with Oregon and Ohio State for December. "He's waiting to decide where to take the others, but they should be soon after those first two visits."
After five games, Schwartz reports 851 yards passing (63%) for nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Rushed 500 yards for six touchdowns, with one touchdown coming from a kickoff return for 91 yards. Dana Hills (4-2) will play at Trabuca Hills (Mission Viejo) on Oct. 21.
