Brandon Thigpen Profile
Thigpen said the Huskers are his heavy favorite, but is not ready to rule out other programs, especially Florida, Arizona, Colorado or USC.
"Nebraska is my only offer right now," said Thigpen, of Rancho Verde High School. "But I think an offer is coming from the Gators soon. I haven't talked to them, but they've talked with my dad a few times. They told him they've seen my tape and want me to play outside linebacker for them. I get a lot of mail from them. Most of my family lives in Florida, so I grew up watching the Gators. Coach Chuck Heater has been text messaging me. I've never seen the campus, so I'd like to get out there soon for a visit.
"Nebraska offered me on February 17. They want me to play safety for them. Coach (Bill) Busch and I talk about once a month. He told me I could play early at safety. Nebraska is a great football school. I like that they have a high athlete graduation rate…I think the highest in the country. Right now, I'm really focused on my school work and trying to get my grades up. They said I need to get Bs and Cs, so that's what I'm doing.
Thigpen and his father, who is a member of the United States Air Force, are looking at schools closer to Florida since the rest of their family resides there, but are not ruling out West Coast schools. "I moved out here with my dad because he's stationed at March Air Force Base. I really like California, but when he retires he's going to move back to Florida where my mom and the rest of my family lives. So that's something I'm thinking about in choosing a school.
"I like Arizona a lot too," he said. "My dad talks to them too. I'm going out for a visit on May 14. I don't know much about them. I get a lot of mail from them. They told my dad they want to meet me before they offer me a scholarship.
"Colorado is another school I'm looking at," Thigpen said. "The Buffalos have been sending me a lot of stuff. Coach (Ron) Collins text messages me a lot just to check in…making sure I'm working hard. They want me to come up for a visit. I'm planning on going up there this summer for camp.
"I really like USC too," he said. They are on my top list. If I got an offer from them, I'd have to think long and hard about it. A prep coach in Virginia told my dad he talked to Pete Carroll about me, but I haven't heard much from them."
Thigpen said he is also being recruited by UCLA, Washington, UNLV, Florida State and Texas Tech.
"My strength is that I don't miss my tackles. I always fight with everything I got to get the ball and make the plays. My weakness is that sometimes I get lazy on my form. I'm working out with my dad trying to get more strong and consistent."
Final junior (3-7) stats: 30 tackles
Thigpen reports a 2.3 core GPA/neither SAT nor ACT scheduled.
