Insane Fans Anywhere?

Westlake Village (Calif.) linebacker Casey Matthews (6-2, 220, 4.7), son of former USC All-America linebacker Clay Matthews, said he favors Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, USC, Oregon and Tennessee—in no order. The Oaks Christian prospect claims to have offers from Georgia Tech, Arizona State, Tennessee, Oregon and Utah.

Casey Matthews Profile

"I just got back from Notre Dame last night," Matthews said. "I liked it a lot. I went out there with Jimmy Clausen and Marc Tyler. They had really nice facilities and the weather was pretty good while we were there. They have a great football tradition there. We went on a tour of the campus and I saw all the good spots. Then we all went to the spring game.

"I don't have an offer from them yet, and I don't want to jinx it, but Coach (Brian) Polian is coming out on May 11 to see me play and if they like what they see, I should know if I have an offer by May 15. It looks pretty good. Coach Polian said I was the only true linebacker they're looking at. They want to recruit either three athletes and one linebacker or four athletes. He said I was at the top of their list. My dad likes Notre Dame. He really doesn't care about the rivalry anymore. He just wants me to go somewhere that will make me the happiest.

"I like USC a lot too," he said. "Everyone in my family went there. They are pretty stacked at the linebacker spot right now. That might be a factor for me. With my brother going there (LB Clay Matthews, Jr), I've met all the coaches and am really familiar with the campus. I haven't got an offer yet and I think it's because of their linebacker depth. I know they're interested, but I'm not sure why they haven't offered.

"Georgia Tech is also high on my list," Matthews said. "My grandpa went there. I'm going to check them out on Friday. They have such a strong football program and great academics. Plus, I used to live in Georgia so I know the area. They offered me March 1. I'll know more after this weekend.

"I also like Oregon. I tripped up there last month. I came out very impressed with their program and facilities. They have a great game atmosphere up there which is really important to me. I like the coaches a lot…they've been together a really long time. They offered me in mid-march.

"Tennessee was my first offer," Matthews said. "I went out there with Jimmy Clausen and some other guys from my school. The Clausen's have a lot of connections out there. I've been there three times since and loved all my visits. The coaches are definitely tops and the program is getting back on its feet after last year. I really liked the whole atmosphere of the school. They live football out there…it's electric."

Matthews said he is also being recruited by Nebraska, UCLA and South Carolina.

Matthews said his ideal school combines strong athletics and academics. "I want to walk into a place that is prestigious in both areas. I want to go to a school where the fans are insane about football. The campus and the hospitality of the fans is important too.

"I'm not getting a lot of pressure from my family to go to USC right now…who knows? That might change down the line. I really want to find a place that's right for me, a place that I feel comfortable. That may be USC, it may not. I think I read plays well and am able to react quickly. I need to work on my coverage and on pass rushing."

Final junior (13-0) stats: 4 interceptions/2 fumble recoveries/3 defensive scores

Matthews reports a 3.2 core GPA/21 ACT.
