Top Ranked Bruins Softball Slow Down Ducks

EUGENE, Ore. – Top ranked UCLA scored five runs after there were two outs in the second inning and went on to defeat Oregon 7-0 Friday afternoon at Howe Field.

The Ducks (23-23, 3-11) could manage only four hits off Anjelica Selden, who improved to 26-4 on the season. Selden struck out 11 and walked two. Amy Harris took the loss and fell to 9-7.

The Bruins (41-5, 13-3) took control when Jodie Legaspi singled sharply up the middle to open the second and following a walk to Whitney Holum, came around to score on Tara Henry's two-out single to left. Harris then walked Andrea Duran to load the bases, setting up Krista Colbrun's 2-RBI single. Caitlin Benyi followed with a single to score Duran, and on the play, Colburn scampered home from third with the Bruins' fifth run when Harris' attempt to catch an advancing Benyi got away from second base. Alicia Cook relieved Harris and got Emily Zaplatosch to ground out to shortstop to retire the side.

UCLA tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth when Duran tripled to chase home Ashley Herrera and Henry.

Duran and Legaspi each had two hits to lead the Bruins, while four Ducks – Suzie Barnes, Lovena Chaput, Ann Marie Topps and Aimee Morris – recorded a hit off Selden.

Cook struck out six in 5.1 innings of relief for Oregon.

The Ducks' final home weekend continues Saturday when Washington visits Howe Field for a 1 p.m. game.
