Calling All Bears

Monrovia (Calif.) running back/cornerback James Davis (5-9, 172, 4.56) hopes his first-team showing at the L. A. combine last weekend might convince California to send an offer his way. The Alta Loma High School standout, who made the team as a running back, claims to have offers from Washington State, Colorado and Colorado State and is also being recruiting by Oregon, Oregon State, Cal and Rutgers.

James Davis Profile

"Cal is my number one favorite," Davis said. "Then it's Colorado, Washington State, Oregon and Oregon State. But, if I were to get an offer from Cal, I would probably commit.

"I've followed Cal every since they beat USC a few years ago. They are known for producing at of good backs. I haven't talked to them yet, but my coach has. I've gotten some stuff in the mail from them. I'm going to their camp in June. I want to get to know the coaches and show them what I can do…and leave them with a good impression.

"I like Colorado too. They offered me three weeks ago for running back. Coach (Darian) Hagan came to my school last week and told me a told me that their junior running back will probably be going to the NFL after next year, so I'd be coming in at a perfect time. I'd have an opportunity to make an impact early.

"Washington State, Oregon and Oregon State are up on my list too," Davis said. "I have an offer from Washington State and I'm getting a lot of letters from Oregon and Oregon State. I don't know a lot of about any of the schools, but I'm going up to camp at Oregon State on July 9. I'm also going to Oregon's camp right around the same time. I'm going to try and hit WSU then too."

Davis said he was very pleased with his performance at the combine last weekend. "I had a great time. I loved the one-on-ones. I really felt great after it was all over because I left knowing that I actually competed against some of the best players in the state and I was just as good as any of them. It really lifted my confidence. Then finding out I made first-team…I couldn't have asked for a better day."

Final junior (8-4) stats: 179 carries/1532 yards/24 TDs; 9 rec/212 receiving yards; 40 tackles/three interceptions

Bench: 305/squat: 495/clean: 245

Davis reports a 2.7 core GPA and is awaiting May 6 SAT results.
