This Could Get Interesting

Linebacker/defensive end Akeem Ayers (6-3, 220, 4.7) from Verbum Dei High School in Los Angeles (Calif.) said most colleges are recruiting him for outside linebacker because of his size and skill. "I've played a little outside linebacker on my high school team, so it doesn't matter to me if I play that all the time in college."

Ayers said that Michigan and Washington are his newest verbal offers--he has 10 total. He also said he favors California (offer) slightly over Nebraska (offer), UCLA, Notre Dame, USC and Oregon (offer).

"Coaches from UCLA and Notre Dame came out in May," Ayers said. "They said they are interested in me but they are waiting for my transcripts before they can offer me. If UCLA, Notre Dame or USC were to offer me, they would be higher on my list, but I don't know who would come first yet.

"I was interested in California before they even offered me. It's an overall great school in every area. I plan to visit this month or next. If I were to happen to go there, I know I would get along with their coaching staff because of the way I get along with my recruiter, Ron Gould (running backs)." Ayers said.

"Nebraska has great basic defense with five (linemen) and three (linebackers). I know I would fit into their scheme because they are end rushers and I'm good at rushing to the sides," he said. "They are also recruiting me pretty hard so I am going to try to visit when I can.

"Oregon and Nebraska are recruiting me the hardest. I don't know much about Oregon but the recruiting coach calls me a lot and keeps in contact.

"UCLA is my family's favorite school, but they have left the decision up to me. It's also only 15 or 20 minutes from my house. It's a family thing," Ayers said.

"Coach (Charlie) Weis at Notre Dame is a good coach and it would be nice to go to a private school since I will be coming from one. I would already know how it runs.

"I don't plan to decide until the end of next season because I want to look over all the schools and wait to see if I get more offers by then," Ayers said.

He reports a 2.8 core GPA and took his SAT on June 3.
