May transfer high schools

Tonio Celotto, 6-3.5, 250, Simi Valley (Calif.) may transfer to a new high school next fall according to his mother Julia Lendl-Celotto. Tonio Celotto is at a USC camp today but this fall he could be on the defensive line at Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, De La Salle High School in Concord or another yet-to-be named high school.

Lendl-Celotto indicated that her son has always been a big youngster and growing up he had hung around older boys. Last year many of those boys graduated from high school and Lendl-Celotto and her ex-husband Mario Celotto think a change in atmosphere may be beneficial to Tonio so that his schoolwork and focus can continue to improve.

"We're looking at Bishop O'Dowd, De La Salle and possibly one other high school," said Lendl-Celotto.

What is Celotto's current recruiting status? Lendl-Celotto indicated that Tonio has given a verbal commitment to Oregon. The soon-to-be senior in high school has a great relationship with the Oregon coach that has been recruiting him.

"He (Tonio) really likes Coach Steve Greatwood," Lendl-Celotto said of her son's commitment to the Oregon Ducks.

While she is a former collegiate athlete herself at USC, Lendl-Celotto and her former husband (Mario Celotto played linebacker for the USC Trojans, 1974-77 and also spent four years in the NFL) have not pushed their son toward USC. Instead, she wants her son to go where it is the best fit for him academically and where he is most happy.

Presently Tonio carries a 2.1 GPA.
