Ducks Tab New Tennis Head

EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Oregon women's tennis coach Nils Schyllander has been elevated to the position of Director of Tennis and will oversee both the men's and women's tennis programs, Athletic Director Bill Moos announced Tuesday.

Schyllander, a native of Tessinkolan, Sweden, led the Oregon women's team to a 12-9 dual record in 2005-2006 and sent only the second doubles pair in school history to the NCAA Championships. Led by 40th-ranked Dominika Dieskova, the women's team thrived under Schyllander in his fourth year of head coaching, who continues to push his student-athletes to success on and off the court.

"I am very excited to take over the head coaching duties of the men's team," Schyllander said. "I have a lot of passion for this University and I appreciate the confidence that Bill and Renee' Baumgartner (Senior Associate Athletic Director) have shown in me."

A former standout at Northern Arizona, Schyllander served as an assistant coach at Oregon for four years before stepping up to take the head coaching reigns in 2003. As a player, the two-time Big Sky Conference honorable mention selection also was voted the team's MVP and Northern Arizona University's men's athlete of the year in 1995.

Schyllander has overseen the Oregon men's program on an interim basis since the departure of former head coach Kevin Kowalik, who resigned his position in May after two years of coaching the men's team. The Ducks finished with 6-16 record last year.

The Ducks will conduct a regional searches for an associate director of tennis and an assistant men's tennis coach.
