"But I'm set on being a linebacker and they've only offered me as a fullback," he emphasized. "The big debate is seeing if USC will give me a chance to play linebacker. They need fullbacks and like what I can do there. But I just don't want to block for four years.
"If USC says I can even try it on defense, they'd be in the lead. Maybe I can do something for them on defense if I redshirt. Even if they'd let me try tailback, I'd consider it. Otherwise, I need to see if they'll give me a chance to try linebacker. I've played it since I was little and I've always been training for that position.
"I hear the USC coaches are on vacation now. I'll call them on the 17th. I think I can earn a spot on their defense, if they give me time.
"But for now I'd say Oregon is the leader and Washington is really No. 2. I never got an offer from Arizona and Arizona State has dropped off.
"Oregon has always kept in contact. I get new letters and information from them all the time. They are really fighting for me over USC on the Ducks web site. I like how much they want me, and they said I would have a chance to start my freshman or sophomore year. At a few camps, I stayed in dorms and talked with guys like D.J. Holt, Casey Matthews and Everson Griffen--who are interested in Oregon, too. It would be cool to play together if they choose Oregon," Campbell said.
"Washington is in the Pac-10 and their linebacker coach, Trent Miles, keeps in contact with me," he said. "They keep in contact a lot. They're a good program and also on the west coast.
"Fresno State isn't in the Pac-10, but coach (Dan) Brown (defensive coordinator) is making the program better and better every year. As for Boise State, I haven't heard from them lately."
Campbell reports a 2.8 core GPA and awaits his May 6 SAT scores.
