Looking for Winning Players

Honolulu defensive end Scott Smith (6-5, 240, 4.9) said he favors Oregon slightly over Arizona, Washington, Colorado and UCLA. The St. Louis High School defender has offers from Hawaii and Oregon. "Washington said they are going to offer me, but they haven't yet," Smith said.

"When I'm on the field, I'm all over--making plays," he said. "I want to improve on everything--nothing specific.

"I like Oregon because they've offered me and they are recruiting me pretty hard. I hear their facilities are good, too. I like the west coast because it's not too far from home," Smith said.

"A whole side of the family on my mom's side lives in Arizona. To be honest, I don't know much about Arizona's program or any of the other schools' football programs because I haven't visited yet. I didn't go to any camps because I can learn everything I would there training here in Hawaii. I plan to take my official visits during the season.

"I like Washington just because they are recruiting me the hardest and I think I will get a scholarship from them," he said. "As a little kid, I always wanted to go to UCLA from watching the Bruins on TV.

"My dad, George Smith, played as a defensive tackle at Colorado--so I know it would be a good school.

"I play basketball too--I'm a forward. But I'm not being seriously recruited, and I won't play anything but football in college.

"After I take my recruiting visits, and after my season ends, I'll pick a school," Smith said. "I want the position coach to push me to the limits but I also want a good coach-player relationship with him. I'm looking for a team and coaches as far as being able to go to the next level, and who's on the team--if they are winning players."

Smith bench presses 315 and squats 405.

He reports a 2.8 core GPA and takes his SAT in October.
