NFL Ducks: Pre-Season Week 3

Week 3 of the NFL pre-season saw rosters being trimmed and unfortunately some Duck Alums got their pink slip as teams get ready for the final week of pre-season. Among the casualties was Tim Day who was released by the Chicago Bears last Thursday. This week also saw some off-field matters attended to.

The Chicago Bears dropped to 1-2 for the pre-season with a 23-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals (2-1).

Things are looking up for quarterback Joey Harrington. The back up signal caller for the Miami Dolphins (1-2) threw for a touchdown of six yards and went 7-for-14 and 66 yards. The Dolphins however lost to the Carolina Panthers, 19-10. The Panthers improved to 3-0 pre-season, although defensive end Devan Long did not play against Miami.

Linebacker Peter Sirmon was in on two assisted tackles for the Tennessee Titans (0-3) in a 20-6 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are now 2-1 for the exhibition run.

Four former Ducks saw action when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-2) took on the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1). Jacksonville won 29-18 and Jag tight end George Wrighster caught two passes for 23 yards with a long of 12. Tampa Bay's linebacker Anthony Trucks recorded a tackle and fellow linebacker Wesly Mallard had an assisted tackle on special teams. The Buc's punter Josh Bidwell had four punts averaging 47.0 yards with a long of 55 yards and one punt came down inside the 20. Tampa Bay's rookie cornerback Justin Phinisee did not play.

Three San Francisco 49ers (1-2) played on Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys (3-0). Offensive lineman Adam Snyder, wide receiver Marcus Maxwell and safety Keith Lewis were listed on the participation list in the 17-7 Dallas win.

Defensive lineman Haloti Ngata had an assisted tackle for the Baltimore Ravens (1-2) in a 30-7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings (2-1). Ngata's teammate and fellow rookie, wide receiver Demetrius Williams had two catches for 27 yards with a long of 18.

The New England Patriots (2-1) overwhelmed the Washington Redskins (0-3) by a score of 41-0. Offensive lineman Nick Steitz was on the participation list for the Patriots.

The battle of NYC went the New York Giants (3-0) way as they defeated the New York Jets 31-7. Rookie quarterback Kellen Clemens was 3-of-11 for 24 yards and was picked off once. Clemens also rushed twice picking up 15 yards with a long run of 9 yards. The Jets are now 1-2 in pre-season.

Wide Receiver Samie Parker had two catches for 44 yards with a long of 23 for the Kansas City Chiefs (1-2) in a 16-12 win over the St. Louis Rams (1-2). Parker's teammate, defensive tackle Junior Siavii was not listed as playing.

The San Diego Chargers (2-1) overcame two quick turnovers and a 14-point deficit to defeat the Seattle Seahawks (1-2) on Saturday night, 31-20. Quarterback A.J. Feeley was perfect throwing 4-for-4 for 54 yards and had a touchdown toss. Chargers' defensive end Igor Olshansy recorded three tackles. Seahawk running back Maurice Morris had 13 carries for 67 yards (long of 33) and caught two passes for four yards. Wide receiver Keenan Howry missed Seattle's game with San Diego because of a hamstring problem.

Running back Reuben Droughns picked up 17 yards on eight carries and had one pass reception for two yards for the Cleveland Browns (2-1) in a 20-17 win over the Buffalo Bills (0-3).

On Monday Night, the Cincinnati Bengals (2-0) will on the Green Bay Packers (1-1). Benals' running back Terrence Whitehead cleared waivers Wednesday and reverted to the team's reserve/injured list Thursday. Whitehead suffered a toe sprain against Buffalo on Aug. 18 and was waived Tuesday according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. He will join Rashad Bauman who was placed on injured reserve because of a ruptured left patella tendon. Bauman will be lost for the season.
