Berkeley, Calif. -– Oregon's Head Coach Mike Bellotti has continually said that the turnover-takeaway ratio is the most important statistic in football and in the first half against Cal the Ducks had three miscues, two interceptions and a fumble. The miscues and a great special teams play by California's DeSean Jackson gave California a 28-10 lead at halftime.

Dennis Dixon made the first big mistake of the game by throwing the first pass of the game to Brandon Hampton and the Bears took the ball over onto the Oregon 6. Oregon continued to be unable to hold onto the ball when Stewart fumbled at the Oregon 26. Lynch took the ball to the Oregon 2 and a rout appeared to be on. Longshore kept the ball and dove in from the 2. With 9:55 the Bears took a 21-3 lead with successful extra point.

Dixon had trouble with his accuracy and the ball was tipped into the air several times.

Jackson used his speed to make Oregon special teams pay and took a Knowles punt back for 65-yard punt return for a touchdown and with 4:40 left in the half the Ducks were down 28-3.

The Ducks rallied for an impressive drive only to be stopped on a 4th and 10 when the bag of tricks was pulled out and Brady Leaf hit a wide-open Rosario for a 29-yard pass catch on the fake field goal. Stewart powered the ball in from 3 to cut the lead to 28-10.
