The 5-10, 180-pound Benicia, Calif., product started the first two games of the season before an ankle injury against Fresno State sidelined him for the remainder of the year. The two-year letterman began the 2006 campaign as the Ducks' only returning experienced cornerback and accumulated eight tackles and two passes broken up in his first two games prior to his season-ending injury.
The former De La Salle High School standout posted 30 tackles a year ago and had recorded an interception in each of his first two seasons.
Bellotti said Bates' status with the football program would be evaluated at the end of the season.
