Ducks Makes Changes in Football Staff

Eugene, Ore. -- Oregon Head Coach Mike Bellotti announced today that Duck coaching staff has been realigned with the reassignment of long-time assistant head coach Neal Zoumboukos from the football program to a staff position within the Oregon Athletic Department. Bellotti also said that Tom Osborne would assume the duties of special teams coordinator and tight ends coach.

Zoumboukas has been with Oregon for 27 years and indicated the timing of the naming of Pat Kilkenny as the new Athletic Director provided the perfect opportunity for him to assume an administrative role similar to the one he held under former Duck Athletic Director Rich Brooks. Zoumboukas indicated that he would fill the staff position full-time until June 30th, at which time he will retire and continue his duties on a part-time basis.

"Neal Zoumboukos has played an integral role in the success of Oregon's football program for more than two decades and is regarded very highly among numerous university circles as well," Kilkenny said. "His value to me will be immeasurable, not only within the athletic department but in helping me become familiar with the different constituents on campus. I am extremely pleased and fortunate that Neal has agreed to fill this role."

Zoumboukos, fought back tears when talking about his time as a Duck coach particularly when he reflected upon the support from his family and friends on the football staff.

For nearly three decades Zoumboukos has been a fixture around the Oregon football program and said listed the Ducks victory at Washington in the 1980s, the Rose Bowl appearance in 1994, beating Texas in the 2000 Holiday Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl win in 2002 and beating Michigan three years ago at Autzen Stadium as highlights of his time a coach.

After Zoumboukos left the podium, Bellotti presented Tom Osborne. This is Osborne's second stint at Oregon. He was the special teams and tight ends coach for the Ducks between 1995 through 2000. Most recently he was on Dirk Koetter's staff at Arizona State but found himself out of a job when Koetter was fired and replaced by Dennis Erickson in January.

Asked to describe his philosophy for special teams, Osborne simply stated, "attack, attack, attack."

Bellotti also mentioned that he would name an associate head coach in a few days from among the current staff. The Oregon headman is also seeking to fill a graduate assistant position among several hundred applicants.
