Ducks Make Late Run, Lead 33-29 at Halftime

Spokane, WA - The #3 seed Oregon Ducks (27-7) used a 10-2 spurt to end the first half and take a 33-29 advantage over the 11th seeded Winthrop Eagles (29-4) into the halftime break. The winner will advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

The Ducks have been led by the play of senior point guard Aaron Brooks, who leads all scorers with 14 points on 5-9 shooting, including 3-5 from three point range. Bryce Taylor and Malik Hairston each have seven points for the Ducks who shot fifty percent from the floor in the first half on 13-26 shooting.

Winthrop, with very balanced scoring – seven players have scored, is led by Chris Gaynor with seven. Winthrop shot 46% from the field for the half on 12-26 from the field.

The game has been competitive throughout with neither team leading by more than six points. Brooks and Taylor triggered the run to end the half with three pointers and Maarty Leunen finished it with a two-handed slam dunk.

Oregon played Winthrop two years ago in Eugene and won 71-56. Lots of current players appeared in that game. All of Oregon's starters except obviously TaJuan Porter played and Brooks had 25 to lead the way. Winthrop has at least five guys who played in that game on their current roster including Craig Bradshaw, Michael Jenkins, and Torrell Martin their top three scorers.
