RB Has Big 1st Game

When you share the backfield with All-American running back Reggie Bush, there's not a lot of carries to go around but La Mesa (Calif.) Helix running back Derrell Hutsona, 5-10, 170 pounds made the most of his limited touches. On just nine carries, Hutsona rushed for 245 yards and three touchdowns to lead Helix, the #1 team in San Diego over Oceanside, the #2 team in the region 43-35.

"I also had a 70 yard run called back because of a penalty but it was a good call," Hutsona said. "I was surprised I got so many carries but they were really keying on Reggie. I usually only get about five carries a game but coach kept calling my number and I was running as hard as I could."

Hutsona first caught our eyes at the Nike Camp in Eugene where he was one of the top three running backs in the drills and also tested very well running a 4.45 in the 40 and jumped 32 inches in the vertical.

Hutsona is planning to send the game tape of the recent Oceanside game out to Div I colleges but many of them already know about him.

"I've gotten calls from Cal, Arizona, Arizona State and Tennessee," Hutsona said. "USC and UCLA are sending me a lot of letters and I just went to the UCLA-Colorado State game and had a good time there.

"I would say my favorite schools right now are Tennessee, Nebraska, Washington and Oregon. I'm hearing from all of them except for Washington."

Academically, Hutsona is carrying a 3.5 GPA and scored a 930 on the SAT as a junior. He's planning to take the test a couple of more times in hope of scoring over a 1000.

Helix's next three games are against Fallbrook, Vista and El Camino, all are ranked in the top five in San Diego so Hutsona will have plenty more chances to show colleges coaches Helix has more than one big time running back.
