Eaton Leads Decathlon Field

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Oregon freshmen Ashton Eaton and Marshall Ackley opened action Wednesday in the Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships decathlon, and stood in first and 20th place overall with scores of 3,920 and 2,999 points, respectively.

The recent Pac-10 Championships decathlon runner-up, Eaton owned a 51-point lead on the field, and was followed by Nick Adcock of Missouri (second, 3,869) and Michael Ayers of the Kinder Sport Track Club (third, 3,769).

On Wednesday, Eaton enjoyed decathlon personal bests in the 100m (10.58w, w:3.7), shot put (42-0) and 400m (48.48). His other first-day marks were 21-10 3/4 (w:0.8) in the long jump and 6-1 1/2 in the high jump.

Ackley's first day included decathlon personal bests in the 100m (11.67, w:1.4), long jump (19-6 1/4, w:3.2) and shot put (39-8). His other marks Wednesday included 5-6 1/2 in the high jump and 56.04 in the 400m.

Looking ahead, a host of Ducks returns for second day action Thursday in the five-day event that runs through Sunday, June 24 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis, Ind. Eaton and Ackley will compete in the final day of the decathlon, and other tentative junior event entries include freshmen Ryan Waite (800m) and A.J. Acosta, Kenny Klotz and Isaac Stoutenburgh (5,000m).

Three Ducks are entered in senior events scheduled for Thursday – junior Galen Rupp and redshirt sophomore Scott Wall in the 10,000m and senior Ryan Brandel (javelin).
