Emerging Star

The best player on the field, in my eyes, during Long Beach Poly's (Calif.) 42-16 demolition of Kahuku (Hawaii) this past weekend was defensive lineman Josh Tauanuu. Here's a closer look.

Tauanuu, 6-2, 284 pounds had a monster game and set the tone early against Kahuku that despite being smaller up front, they were not going to be pushed around. Tauanuu had two tackles for loss in the opening series and was blowing up his man all game long. He finished with 10 tackles despite sitting out most of the second half due to the blowout.

Tauanuu might be the quickest lineman off the ball in the West region. He has a great first step, uses his hands well and is naturally strong. He also has great pass rushing technique and dominated the one-on-one drills at both the SoCal and NorCal Nike Camps.

Tauanuu is currently rated our No. 10 defensive tackle in the West Coast but he'll move way up the next time we update our position rankings. He has a non-stop motor, never takes a play off and is tough as nails. The recruiting attention has been a bit slow to come by thus far and that could be because Tauanuu hasn't taken the SAT yet but he's a very talented player and should be an absolute steal for somebody.
