Newbies Finish Off Day I

Eugene -- It was the underclassmen's turn in the barrel this afternoon for the 2007 Oregon Ducks in Day 1 of Fall Camp 2007. Several new faces got the first taste of Pac-10 football training camp this afternoon, and several responded by showing the coaches some talent.

Oregon's Mike Bellotti was very pleased with what he saw on the field in the second practice session composed of underclassmen and members of the 2007 recruiting class. While he could not really make any comments on the interior linemen (as they were doing more static-type drills), he thought the conditioning was very good, even for the players that did not participate in the summer recruiting session. Although he cautioned that this was the first day of practice, and no one was experiencing any aches or pains and certainly there was no contact.

Among those that Bellotti cited were Eddie Pleasant, Aaron Pflugrad, Kenny Rowe, Malachi Lewis, David Paulson and Terrance Pritchett.

Another player that caught Bellotti's eye was quarterback Nate Costa. Costa was very accurate in the passing drills, throwing a very tight spiral. For most of the late session, senior Dennis Dixon was also on hand, although not in uniform as he had worked out earlier in the day.

Bellotti also felt that Pflugrad made strides as a punt returner, a position the Ducks want to solidify before the start of the season. Pflugrad also showed some nifty moves in running his pass routes.

"He's a great route runner," Bellotti said of Pflugrad. "He has great body control and the ability to get in and out of breaks and that is very important obviously."

Note: Just before the start of the afternoon session, Jeffrey Maehl arrived on campus and watched the workout from the sideline.
