Matthews Likely To Play Saturday

On Tuesday, Oregon's Head Coach Mike Bellotti indicated 11 true freshman likely will play this season and many see action on Saturday against Houston. One of those players is middle linebacker Casey Matthews.

When Casey Matthews announced that he would attend the University of Oregon in the summer of 2006, Duck fans immediately started following his career. Matthews played for Oaks Christian High School in WestLake Village, California and was hot property on the recruiting trail amassing seven offers from programs around the country.

Last season at Oaks Christian, Matthews was the leading tackler with 154 total tackles (105 solo) on a team that finished with a perfect 15-0 record.

After graduating from high school, Matthews packed his bags and headed north on I-5 and enrolled at the University of Oregon for summer session. He was also able to take advantage of working out with his future teammates and that must have helped because when fall camp started, it was clear Matthews could compete right away.

Matthews will back up junior John Bacon and it was very clear that if need be, Matthews could handle the job in the middle quite well.

Matthews took time out from practice to talk to eDuck Sports about Coach Bellotti's announcement and how practice has been going.

Matthews and Ducks will face Houston on Saturday at Autzen Stadium with kick off scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
