Bellotti talks about Cal and the Bye Week

Eugene -- Mike Bellotti stopped on his way to practice inside Autzen Stadium and talked about last week's loss to No. 3 ranked California and what Oregon is doing this week. The Ducks have a bye, however that doesn't mean Oregon is taking the week off.

Several players did have the day off on Tuesday while about half of the coaches were off on recruiting trips. This week, the Ducks are concentrating on conditioning and getting healthy after five weeks of competition.

Oregon is the 14th ranked team in the nation with a 4-1 record and would like nothing more that to keep things going when Washington State comes to town on Oct. 13th. The Ducks were oh-so close to beating California last Saturday but when the whistle sounded the scoreboard read California 31, Oregon 24. Right after the game last Saturday, Bellotti was very clear what happened -- too many turnovers. This week the Ducks are working on ball security. Preaching it in meetings and in practice.

Last season, Oregon started off similarly by winning its first four games then were pounded in the fifth game of the season by California, 45-24. Is there a difference between this year and last? Bellotti thinks so, for one thing the Ducks were physically beaten up by Cal at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley a year ago. This year however the game was much different and even though the Ducks couldn't quite get over the hump of beating their nemesis, there is no doubt the team is in much better shape -- physically and mentally.

Several coaches were absent today on recruiting trips. In fact Defensive Coordinator Nick Aliotti was making sure all his bags were packed and loaded into his car so that he could make his flight as soon as practice ended today.

While there was disappointment at the loss to Cal, one couldn't help but notice the air of confidence among the Ducks. One loss doesn't make or break a season and there is still plenty of football left in the 2007 campaign.

Here are some of the things Bellotti had to say today:
